When the Blue Mountain Village Association lost their founder—a true pillar of the community—they sought a meaningful way to honour his legacy. I was privileged to create a sculpture that not only paid tribute but also brought people together in remembrance.
With no set theme, I began by learning about the man—his passions, his goals, and what defined him. He was devoted to bringing people together in meaningful ways and had a deep love for music.
Over the next month, I explored ways to capture his spirit in sculpture. The guitar emerged as the perfect symbol—evoking the warmth of people gathering around a campfire, singing and sharing in the moment. It also embodied the idea of music drawing passersby in, inviting them to connect and create new shared experiences.
Sensing the sculpture needed more, I looked up some poems and settled on 5 that I thought captured his essence. Then, a group of 5 people who knew him best were asked to rate them in order of preference. “MUSIC, says the things that words alone can never say” was the favourite.
The sculpture took about 2 months to design and fabricate. During this time there was constant communication and consultation with C.A.D. designers, laser cutting operators, machinists, press operators and concrete contractors.
The sculpture is now located by the pond at Blue Mountain Resort Village, in front of the Westin Hotel, in the Town of The Blue Mountains, Ontario.
